CT Coronary Calcium Scoring

What is a CT Coronary Calcium Score (CCS)?

The images obtained during the scan are analysed using specialised computer software to identify the presence of calcified (hard) plaques that may be present in your coronary arteries.  Unfortunately, CCS exams cannot identify the presence of non-calcified (soft) plaques nor the degree of narrowing that may be present.  However, the presence of calcified plaques within the coronary arteries is considered to be an early sign of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD).

CHD is a condition in which a waxy substance called plaque builds up within the coronary arteries.  Over time this plaque can calcify (harden) or rupture.  Hardened plaque narrows the coronary arteries and reduces the flow of oxygen rich blood to the heart.  This can cause chest pain or discomfort known as angina.  In other cases, plaques can break off or rupture, resulting in complete occlusion of a coronary artery, which is the most common cause of heart attack.

A Coronary Calcium Scoring investigation is most useful for people who are at moderate risk for coronary heart disease (persons with a smoking history, elevated blood pressure and/or elevated cholesterol levels).  People who are at moderate risk have a 10-20 percent chance of having a heart attack within the next 10 years.  The Coronary Calcium scoring may help your doctor decide who within this group may need further treatment.

Your preparation requirements

No caffeine, cola, coffee, smoking, energy drinks or exercise for 24 hours prior to your scan. Please fast for 4 hours prior.

Please notify your doctor and the staff at Sound Radiology if you have diabetes, renal disease, any allergies or you think you could be pregnant.

What to expect

Upon arrival at the practice, you will be asked to complete a calcium score questionnaire.  This ensures any pre-existing medical conditions, allergies and medications are acknowledged and the appropriate preparation is defined.  If you have any concerns or questions, nursing staff are always available for clarification.

The nursing staff will collect you from the waiting room and escort you to the change cubicle. You will be asked to change into a gown and you may also be asked to remove, all jewellery, reading glasses, mobile phones, wallets etc. You will be asked to lie on the CT table for your scan and the technician will place ECG dots on your chest to monitor your heart rate. They will explain what will be expected for your study, answering any questions that arise.  Images are taken as you move through the middle of the CT gantry (doughnut looking component).  You may be expected to hold your breath at differing intervals throughout the imaging examination.
